Mercer Island will be a greener place to live with the opening of E-Recycle, a new service designed to help you get rid of your electronic waste.

Brothers and co-owners Steve and Tony Lee opened the business located at 7835 S.E. 30th on Nov. 1, 2010.

Steve Lee said he is supporting the green movement.

“No one on the Island had done this before,” he said. “I’m trying to reduce our carbon footprint.” for our children's future.

He said he has seen old computer monitors dumped along roadways. E-Recycle is a much better alternative.

The brothers will take computers — both laptop and desktop — monitors, televisions, cell-phones, The business is certified with the State Ecology Department. Electronic equipment that cannot be refurbished for sale is bundled and picked up by the manufacturer. None of the e-waste is shipped overseas.

Old computers that can be refurbished can be re-sold for as low as $50.

If you don’t have the time or ability to wipe out your hard drive, E-Recycle can totally wipe it out.

“It’s illegal to go into other people’s hard drives,” he said.

Steve Lee was previously in the oil business, and his brother, Tony, is a realtor.

The annual recycling event to collect old equipment and household items returns again this spring.

On Saturday, March 26, from 9 am. to 3 p.m. at the Mercer Island boat launch, located at 3600 E. Mercer Way, Islanders can bring items to be recycled.

Items that are allowed include: alkaline batteries, appliances and scrap metal, cardboard, household goods and clothing in good condition, motor oil, filters and antifreeze and tires, limited to six per household.

Items not accepted at the event include: construction or demolition debris, garbage, mattresses and furniture, plastics, window glass, cleaning products, household chemicals, fluorescent lights, paint, among others.

There is a charge for certain items. All are cash only. TV sets are $20 for under 36 inches; $25 for over 36 inches. Charges apply for other items as well.

Island residents can also use the free E-Cycle location on the Island for recycling computers, monitors, laptops and televisions.

E-Recycle is located at 7835 S.E. 30th Street on Mercer Island and is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Contact E-Recycle at (206) 230-8188 for more information.
